K'gari

This blog post will just be a short recap of my trip to Fraser Island. A few days ago I returned from my greatest adventure yet. K'gari. The common name is Fraser Island, while the aboriginal name given to the island by the native people is K'gari. K'gari is the world's largest sand island which is also home to some of the purest sand in the world. The trip was organized by the international office here at Southern Cross and it included about 15 of us. It was a bit of an adjustment at first, being on an island for 3 days without running water. I really did learn to appreciate flushing toilets and showers after going without for a few days. Some of the things we got to see while on the island were wild dingos, crystal clear water in Lake Mckenzie, the Maheno ship wreck, large sand dunes, and fresh clear springs and rivers. Just for clarification, we did sleep in tents on the island and had dingos walking around in the middle of the night. I woke up one night as I ...

So Far, So Good

I have been in Australia for just over two weeks now, and it's only getting better. I have been working (volunteering) at Friends of the Koala rescue center for almost every day. I'm glad they let me spend so much of my free time there, as I have a lot of it. In the last week, they have let me take on more responsibility, and allow me to experience more things. Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to go on a koala rescue, which was truly amazing. I have also had a friend at the rescue center, D'Artangan. He worried me for the past couple of days as he wasn't eating, and he has been loosing weight. However, he started eating the fresh leaf yesterday as soon as I brought it in.  Last Friday, the international students were taken to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where I got to meet a nice kangaroo who got a little too excited to see me. I know that it proves animals really do like me. I went right in to the enclosure, and the kangaroo came right to me. After try...

The Trip From Hell

I began my trip to Australia departing Chicago O'hare airport. However, before I could even leave home, the trip went downhill fast. While waiting for boarding to start, one of the workers from American Airlines made an announcement. He said "ladies and gentlemen, we have just been told that the plane is broken". Yes, this man announced to everyone waiting to board this full plane, that the plane was broken. They then determined that the only way for this plane to leave, would be to lower the weight on the plane, so they asked for 27 passengers to volunteer for different flights. After about an hour, the airline had gotten the volunteers and we would begin boarding. We then left the airport about an hour and a half behind schedule. Once the plane arrived in LAX, my first layover, we had another issue. Because we landed late, and LAX is a busy airport, there were no open gates for us to depart the plane. The pilot then proceeded to drive around for about 30 minutes befor...
